Lunes Diciembre 13, 2010

Hola amigos!! It is Lunes Diciembre 13…only 12 more days until Navidad!!

I forgot about some photos and a story from Sabado noche.

That night we went out at around 9pm because we heard that there would be a large parade and celebration as the next day was the Virgin of Guadalupe’s birthday. We were not disappointed!!

Here is what we saw.

The puppets returned.

Here is the crowd forming behind the float carrying a young nina playing the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Two closer photos of nina playing the Virgin.

The last 4 are photos of people following the float. The baskets on their heads are to honor the Virgin.

The words on the t shirts above, state “God loves you”.

There were lots of fireworks and the parade made it’s way through La Crucecita and beyond.

All of this led up to the big day on Domingo…which for the followers, started at 5am. We were up at 630am for Barra…but missed the 5am photo opportunity!!

On to the actividad of hoy…today’s activity!!

Up at 7am for rafting. The 10 of us met at our condos at 8am and then boarded onto the back of a large pick up truck that had seating. The drive took at least 90 minutes and as we headed into the mountains, the temperature dropped quite a bit.

We passed through some small barrios and made it to our drop off spot where we suited up with helmets and life preservers.

The water that was running was not nearly as deep as it would be in September, right after rainy season, but we hit what I am sure were a few level 3 rapids and the rest were level 2.

We had a blast and yours truly was the first to lose his footing in the raft…oh about the first three times. But we all had some close calls and at the second to last rapid, we were intentionally put into a unbalanced situation and both Bexico and I were bailed out of the raft.

No crisis as it was all planned and I was thrown a rope while Bexcio swam and floated to shore. The water was VERY refreshing as it was mountain water, but we all have made note of the cooler days and nights recently…no complaints though!!

The rafting (50% floating/50% paddling) was probably 3 to 4 hours, including a stop for some fresh fruit and bebidas.

The truck met us at the bottom of the run and we were told that during high water, it would be another 4 hours of rafting to get to La Bocana.

We settled up…a good deal at $500 pesos per vs the normal $750 (thanks Jay) and then a $100 peso propina for our guide who did a great job and took us to the best parts of the rapids.

Our guide was Manual (?) and I am not sure how much Ingles he knows, but he knew enough to say stop, forward, back (paddling commands)…all we really needed to know today.

On the way back to town, we stopped at a spot in the middle of no where…a little abarrotes. They had a few home fridges stocked with cerveza and pop, so Bexico had some Lift Manzana and I had a Coca Light…all good!!

A family ran this spot and the Senora came out to talk to the Espanol speaking peeps. Her daughter was there, and a few grand kids were running around. They had two parrots and even though we were told the first one would nibble on us, we ended up with the second one on our fingers and eventually drinking Coca from the can and some Coca Light from a small basso. We are sure that bird was getting juiced by the time we left.

There was a small crafts stand on the property, and it looked brand new. They were selling some locally made mescal as well as purses etc.

As we were getting ready to go, a small nino, maybe 4 or 5 years old, had brought out the two sample bottles and plastic taster cups. He asked me if I wanted to try and I said no, but then changed my mind to see what he would do.

I asked him for a sample and he really wanted to pour it himself, but after a VERY brief discussion, his madre helped him. He then gave me the cup, I thanked him for it and then he smiled and shyly ran into the stand.

But then he came back out, looking as proud as can be!! I guess he has learned over time that the family gives samples and that was what he wanted to do. It was hilarious and we all agreed the stop was fun and the people living there were mucho simpatico!!

Got home at around 430pm and went out for veggies and some local roti pollo. Of course the place we wanted to go to (orange building from a post a few days ago), was cerrado due to some internal construccion.

We went to the place across the street from our condo and checked it out. $120 pesos for entero, arroz and sauce verde or $90 pesos for entero (whole) sin (without) the fixings. We did not write down the word for fixings…will get on it, as it is a word I have never seen before.

$60 pesos for ¼ sandia, a skinned pina, some papas and a tomato…most fruit and veggies are cheap!!

Dinner was good, but this pollo is more charcoal grilled not so much roti. We will try the other place next time and then stick to Che if need be.

Misc

Supposed to be a HUGE meteor shower tonite at 2am. Not sure we will make it, but it is dark enough here to see it. Will keep you updated.

Lunar eclipse on the 20th? Rick’s hermana is a wealth of facts…she even knew Canadians call it the Arbutus tree up North.

The cheddar cheese on salditas was delicious!!

845pm…watching MNF and getting ready to hit the sack…I am bushed again.

Manana? Gym, look for Daniel my Fonatur guy, get llanta repaired, check for mail at the correo (expecting two cards) and get a package of our Mojon ownership papers ready for Lanny to take to his lawyer. Busy day in Huatulco!!

Bexico is busy as always on the computer and had the lady from Turkey email her back to say Bexico’s work was the best she had seen and asking if she would consider working on some future projects!! She is still waiting to hear back regarding a sample of her work that was sent to Texas as well as London England. Exciting stuff.

That is all for now.

Hasta luego.
