Day 5 Salt Lake City, UT to The Dalles, OR

Howdy amigos!!

845pm here in The Dalles, Oregon.

Read all about it.

Looooong day!! Left at 730am and even with gaining an hour at the Oregon border, I arrived here at 545pm. Not all 11 hours was driving though. Hello to a pit stop in Meridian, Idaho where I grabbed some great gear at Babies R Us…and a few more pairs of cammo shorts at Old Navy for you know who. End of summer sale!!

But based on the blog from ayer, I expected to be here at 515-530pm…so pretty accurate. The km? 1109 and I had projected 1100!!

Ok, here are the notes Bono took.

-brrrr

-para gliders on the hills above Salt Lake City

-lots of Highway Patrol

-but loving the 120 km/hr speed limit

-full first hour was on cruise control…no brakes needed

-I84 had lots of rolling hills…empty of vehicles…church anyone?

-drove by Golden Spike National Historic Site and here is their website.

-just past Snowville Utah? Hello Idaho

-lots of cattle…burger for dinner?

-flat and boring drive for a few hours

-lots of road work…down to one lane

-had a few laughs and one trucker honked his horn at Moonie!!

-averaging 110 km/hr for the first 4 hours

-drove past Snake River

Here is some info on Snake River

Why do I remember the name? Evil Knievel attempted to jump it!!

-100 large wind turbines…none moving

-lots of extinguished grass fires

-since moving to Mexico, what are two things I totally forgot existed? Fuze and Clif Bars

-when was the last time you tried to use your Cdn credit card at an American gas pump? It won’t work as they need a zip code. But….in Utah you just give your card to the cashier, fill up and come back in to pay. In Idaho, you have to give them a dollar figure for them to pre-authorize. And in Oregon? This is one of two states (I was told), where it is illegal to pump your own gas!!!

I went to a station on empty and the guy said $35 was a full tank. I had to get him to add another $35. Doph

-225pm entered Oregon

-230pm entered the city of Ontario

-beautiful rolling hills in this part of the country

-lots of signs warning about snow tires and chains. I think I will need a different route back in diciembre

-loved this electronic sign right before a very winding canyon road. It warns you about the road, tells you your speed and then if your are too fast, it state “SLOW DOWN”

-if I owned a horse, it would look like this

-car in front of us was busted for speeding. Thanks for taking one for the team!!!

-just crossed the 45th Parallel. What is so interesting about that? Read on!!

-into the mountains…pine forests…nice

-came off of a 6% grade hill

-hello Indian reserve…hello casino!!

-super windy through the Columbia River region

-100 plus wind turbines here…and working!!

-exit 147 off I84? Ione, Oregon…zip code 97843

-wind surfers on the Columbia. It was blowing…looked cooooold

-lots of vineyards on the Columbia. Looked beautiful.

And that folks, was the day. We did have KFC for la cena and the truck is ready for mañana’s 90 minute drive into Portland.

Just waiting to hear back from N&A about the “plan”.

Truck is still in one piece…knock on wood.

Bexico? I know she saw my Kim, our sister in law. And she
Has her new Mac up and running already!! How exciting. I am about to give her a call and see what she has been up to.

Did I tell you the loonie is now worth 12.5 pesos? It has appreciated almost 11% since the end of May. Now do you understand why we live there? Cheap chelas!!! ja ja ja

Have a great lunes all.
