Domingo October 3, 2010

Below is the blog written over the past two days. Today is Domingo (Sunday) and Bex has morning sickness. Oops, I guess that could give the wrong impression. She has caught a bug and has dias, tardes and noches sickness. Fluids and some good food and she will be back at the pool in no time!!

Some great phrase to know if you are trying to avoid getting ill..."no requiere refrigeracion una vez abierto"...una vez means "once". And "lugar fresco y seco"...store in cool and dry. All that from my Maple syrup bottle. lol

Nice and sunny today...no NFL at The Tipsy as it is closed...argh. They need a REAL sports bar down here...and I might be the guy for that venture!! I did manage to watch two games in Espanol...Vick getting hurt is the same in both languages.

Sunny? I moved the thermometer's outside transmitter to a sunny concrete ledge on the floor below us, and it registered 45 degrees!!

Any way, after this update, I am headed back to cook some pasta with tomato and chorizo sauce. Some fresh bollo with that should help Bex.

Manana we are off to banco, Telmex (internet) and to look into the immigration office so we can get the official 1 year visas...the FM3.

Enjoy the update below!!

Hola!!

It is Saturday night and we are just sitting in the condo and arranging the blog. Today will be about some photos we took in the hope that it gives you a better idea about Huatulco and some of the experiences we have.

I have thought long and hard about sending these photos, as I do not want the wrong impression made of Mexico. It is a GREAT place and we love it here…but it has it’s own peculiarities, just as Toronto, Vancouver and anywhere in the World does. I share these peculiarities because they are Mexicoisms, and they make us laugh, ponder and sometimes just wonder why. We don’t look down our noses and always remember to not cast stones from within the glass house…and with that, here are some photos.

This is located in our pantry shelf…the one plug used, leads to the light in the hood over the stove. Not sure what I would plug in here. Oh yeah, the hood has no exhaust vent. It sucks up the hot air etc from the stovetop, and then blows it up into the air above the stove!! Lol

This is a photo of the breaker box for the laundry room. As you can see right above it is an open window and the showerhead. Enough said?

Here is the internet shop:

Here is the Panificadora (bakery) and some of the products we buy. This is a busy place and makes great items….fresh every day. The first item is a bollo (roll), a bit crispy on the outside but soft inside. The second is a postre (dessert) and it is called a palmiere in Canada…have not seen the name here. All butter and sugar!!

This manufacturer is across the street from the internet store. They have two looms downstairs and a few upstairs. It looks like a family run business and it looks to be manual labour. They sell their products right in the store and you can get great deals there by cutting out the middleman. As well, you can order products in the size, color and pattern of your choice.

Here is a colorful picture of some of their thread:

This is from a different store, but they have a ton of product for sewing and knitting…a lot of things are hand made as they are much more economical for the locals to make vs buy.

The title of this business has a word we used in a previous blog…papel hygenico…this is a “paper store” and it is like a very small Staples…primarily note books and utensils for school kids.

Back at the condo…this is our hot water heater…12 x 18 inches…turns on when the tap is turned to hot…water gets HOT in about 2 minutes…needs a pressure boost though.

At Mojon (our playa), we will use both solar heat and water heaters like this…but with the pressure booster so as the guests can experience a great shower.

This is what greets any guests we may have come over…our Squatchi shrine!!

We bought two of these (folded up of course) at Costco in Van before we left.

We tested one of these yesterday…this is Bex after a hard day in Mexico:

One of these bottles is for when Olen comes to visit, and the other will be opened and consumed by TS and myself…on the patio of Casa de Dos Conjeos once they are completed!!! This bottle has its original 1971 seal on it, was once owned by TS’s father and was passed on to me as a special gift!!

Last night (Friday), we met the Dutch gal from next door. She is an au-pere for a Dutch/Mexican couple and has been hired for a 6 day work week where she talks only Dutch to the two kids, aged 4 and 6. Nice gal, just out of high school and her parents are coming to visit next month. She does some dance/aerobics in town and Bex may join her. Other then that, we talked about all the Dutch things I know…but she doesn’t know about rusks? But TS’s favorite Dutch meal is one of her favorites too…hoot spoot (??)

As for Saturday, today was another day at the gym…wow was it hot in there today. These photos are from today’s walk to the gym.

Tires are expensive:

Not everyone can afford a phone line:

This confuses me. The curve to the right approaches an Alto sign. But the road is a one way road in the direction of the car hood you see. Hmmmm…

Another craftsman pulled up in his truck to display his wares:

And for Padre and his translating hobby, I saw this sign as I was walking around the industrial area, where the gym is located. What does it mean?

Came back and gave Rick the ride to the airport and then drove around looking for the lavanda auto that he had told me about. I found them but as it is Saturday, they were all busy. I found one a block from the condo and after confirming $70 pesos (did you know Mexico was the first nation to use the $$ sign?) due to the dirt and all the water needed, I left the truck and Bexico and I hit the internet.

After the internet we picked up some fresh fruit along calle Carrizal (our street), and then picked up the truck and went to Super Che. The truck was very clean…all manual labour…next time I ensure they get into the rims!!

Super Che on Saturday…avoid it if you can. We picked up some chorizo (Dad’s favorite) for Sunday dinner, some chuleta cerdo (pork chops) for my dinner and this super fresh sesame baguette (8 pesos…75 cents). Also picked up some misc items to last through until next week. Ten ganchos for $20 pesos….more hangers!!

Tomorrow ‘s breakfast is pan frances con tocino…Mom’s favorite cinnamon for the French toast and Bex’s favorite meat….bacon.

We have been saddened to see the large recycling bins disappear from beside Super Che. We do have recycling onsite, but when I asked the security guard about reciclar papel y carton (paper and cardboard recycling) he said no. I asked about all of Huatulco and he said nada. I will need to dig deeper as they used to have this service. So for now we ensure we recycle our plasticos, aluminio and botella.

Here is a word that expresses a bodily function no one wants to have….el infarto. What is your first guess? Everyone loves an infarto joke…not!! It means heart attack…doph.

Yesterday’s weather was mainly sunny with a few cloudy periods, with a high of 31.9 and a low of 25.2. These temps are recorded by my transmitter located in the shade, just outside our front door, on top of the mailbox. Talking about mail…any postcard I have EVER sent from Mexico to Canada has never arrived. Dad is testing the mail coming down as we actually have an address here…haven’t seen a post office and no idea where I would buy stamps to send mail to you all, but if Dad’s mail works, I will let you know where to send us your Christmas cards!!

Saturday night in the big town!! We are headed out for a walk to the town square (zooloco) where the familes gather and chat. Some eat helados (ice cream) or other treats that vendors happen to be selling. It is small town Mexcio on a night like today and is very charming.

I am saving this entry to my USB key so we don’t repeat yesterday’s mental lapse!!

Sunday is about football and Nascar at the Tipsy Blowfish, but we will be at the internet site around 6pm so Bex can try a Skype with her Madre.

Until then,

saludos
