Updated Report for Saturday September 18, 2010

Hello again from Vegas!! And hello to the six "official" followers of this blog, including a shout out to one Sister Rex in Windsor...we hope her garden is flourishing :)

We have changed our plans...we are both going to become professional black jack players!! Back from dinner (Melon, where do smart people sit at PF Changs?...on the wood of course) and stopped at New York, New York where Bex broke even and even with a few ditzs at my table, I won $200 as well as another $20 on video poker. Nerve wracking hand was the $50 bet and I was dealt two aces. Split the aces and got 6 on the first ace (for 17), another ace, so I split that for a total bet of $150. Got 21 and 19 on the last two hands. Dealer ended at 18 so I won 2 out of 3....phew.

This town is crazy. At our hotel, we asked if we could get the penthouse suite comped, but Motel 6 has only 2 levels and don't comp high rollers!! lol We are at the "6" (as peeps in the Motel 6 club call it) just down Tropicana Blvd, a quick 15 minute walk to the Strip...all for $60. Oh yeah, it is 1130pm and about 30 degrees outside. Soooo warm this desert air.

Enough about Vegas...but I did finally shave as people were starting to confuse me with Joaquin Phoenix (Google it)...nasty looking beard is gone.

We started the day with another lesson. The little "dot" on the alarm clock means pm, thus the alarm would have gone off at 7pm as scheduled!! lol Oh well, it was going to be a short day anyway. And it only took 1.5 hours from eyes open to hitting the road.

On the road at 10am and found a route that was not on our map (Bex loves going old school...no Garmin/GPS for us) and we headed into the mountains. It was steep...but wow was it a beautiful canyon!! It is route 168 East (near Death Valley) and goes from  Big Pine into Nevada. But as it is a border crossing, we were concerned that there was no one there to check fruits and firewood!!!

We reached 6000 feet elevation on this route and later on in Nevada, we hit 7400 feet. The truck was in 2nd or 3rd gear most of the way up, 2000-3000rpm max. The craziest thing was the many cyclists we saw pedalling up these hills...good for them...but are they nuts or what?

After the Nevada border, it became one long highway. But before we got there, we took these photos.
Yup, that's the road down there.

Co-Pilot
We drove 4.5 hours or so and 440 km so it was not a long day. Into our hotel by 3pm and then off to the 24 Hour Fitness up the street. Great to get back in the gym.

Why is it that ANYONE in the USA can own a gun, but if you do not have a zip code, you cannot buy gas at the pump using your credit card? Strange place this USA.

Still double checking tomorrow's route, but it had been planned for 700 km and we may re-think that and/or add another day. It is not only a lot of km, but it is on smaller highways and we may want to stop and admire the Grand Canyon for more then a few minutes. In our next blog you will find out what we decided. Either way, weather will be hot...Vegas is forecast for 38 tomorrow.

Four days down and all is well.

Here is the fortune that was in Bex's cookie at PF Changs...."Travelling to the south will bring you unexpected happiness"....mine said "glad you finally shaved".

Until next time.

Saludos
